User Guide

How to get a clear picture of your money with MIMO.

Quick start

You can be useful in MIMO within five minutes.

  1. Create an account and, in Settings, check that your timezone is correct.
  2. Press + Add and record your latest income, for example your salary.
  3. Record a few recent expenses. Pick a category, enter the amount, and press Add Expense.
  4. Open Budget, enter your expected income and a planned amount for the categories you care about, then save.
  5. Return to Home. You now see income, expenses, what you saved, what is available, and how each budget is doing.

The monthly rhythm

MIMO follows four steps that repeat every month: Plan, Track, Understand, Improve.

Plan in Budget. Track by adding transactions as they happen. Understand with Home, Calendar and Insights, which compare what happened with your plan. Improve by adjusting next month’s plan.

A good routine: add transactions the same day, and spend five minutes once a week on Home and Needs Attention.

Adding transactions

The + Add button is always available, in the sidebar on a computer and in the middle of the bottom bar on a phone.

Choose Expense, Income, Saving or Debt, enter the amount (dots are added for you), pick a category, check the date, and add a short description if it helps you remember. Saving can be linked to a savings goal, and Debt must be linked to a debt.

Made a mistake? Open Log, then use the pencil to edit or the bin to delete. Everything else updates automatically; you never retype a number elsewhere.

Reading Home

The four figures at the top are the month’s income, expenses, savings and what is available. Under them, Budget Overview shows your biggest planned categories (green is fine, yellow is 80% or more, red is over), Recent Activity shows the latest transactions, and Needs Attention lists conditions worth acting on.

A brand-new account shows an empty state instead of sample numbers. Everything you see comes from your own records.

Planning a budget

Open Budget and pick the month. Enter your expected income and a planned amount per category. Total planned plus Unallocated always equals your expected income; if you plan more than you expect to earn, MIMO shows Over-allocated in red.

Each category has a class (Need, Want or Saving). It feeds the 50/30/20 view, and you can change it for a single month without affecting other months.

Copy from last month fills in the previous plan so you only adjust what changed. Setting an amount to 0 removes that category from the month’s plan.

Log and Calendar

Log is the full list of transactions. Filter by type, search by description or category, and page through older entries.

Calendar shows the same data by date. Coloured dots mark income, expenses, savings and debt payments; tap a day to see its transactions.

Insights

Year shows the annual picture: totals, income against expenses per month, and where most of your spending went.

Budget compares planned with actual for any month, with the remaining amount per category.

50/30/20 shows how your month splits across needs, wants and savings. Treat the guideline as a reference point; many households deliberately differ from it.

Savings goals and debt

Savings: create a goal with a target (and optionally a date). MIMO shows progress and roughly how much you need per month to reach the date. Use Add contribution to record money toward it.

Debt: add what you still owe, the yearly interest, your minimum payment and due day. Use Record payment each time you pay. MIMO tracks the balance, the next due date and a rough payoff estimate, and marks the debt paid off when the balance reaches zero.

Settings and your data

In Settings you can change your name and timezone, add or archive categories, and export every transaction as a CSV file.

Archive a category instead of deleting it so your history keeps its meaning.

Tips for reliable numbers

  1. Record transactions the same day, while you still remember them.
  2. Keep categories few and consistent; five to ten cover most people.
  3. Use the description for the detail and the category for the group.
  4. Do not guess to make a month look tidy. Insights are only as honest as the data behind them.
  5. Never share your password. MIMO staff will never ask for it.
